Boy, I dropped the ball.
Task: Capture visually the five elements: wood - metal - earth - water - fire.
While I heard of this old Chinese philosophical concept, frankly I did not know enough to wrap my brain around it. So I figured I would find a nice traditional Chinese Gift Shop where they sell all kind of decorations, carvings, and other paraphenalia, so I could see how other people illustrated the concept. And then I got lost. I simply did not find a China Town here in Cleveland. Google Map suggested three locations, but at the first one I did not see even a single store sign with Chinese letters. I drove to another shopping mall, called Asian Market, but half the stores were closed. I did find some Chinese gift shop, but the sales lady did not speak enough English to show me anything. Of course this might be a silly idea. Who could learn anything substantial about such an old tradition while standing on one foot? So I drove to the third location where I found one building with some Chinese stores. Google identified the block as part of old China Town. It was in an industrial neighborhood, across the street from a large parking lot.
Most likely I should have invested more time and effort to research the project, but I felt that I already learned something, so I rather chalked up the task as something to explore later. The whole idea of a weekly challenge is to expand my horizons and not to get obsessed with it.
